Workshops with Tantara Taiko
To run a one day Taiko workshop we would need a minimum of 8 people and a maximum of 16, we can run the workshop from 11am to 5pm (or if preferred 10am to 4pm ) and will supply a buffet lunch and tea and coffee included in the price. We have a mixture of authentic Japanese Taiko drums and homespun practice drums but all workshop participants will have the chance to play our authentic Japanese Taiko drums which are of the Nagado, Okedo, Hirodo and Shime designs.
For up to 10 people the cost will be £40 per person and for between 11 and 16 people will be able to reduce the cost to £35 per person, with the workshop being run at our base in Rochdale. The dojo is only 5 minutes from Junction 21 of the M62 or we can collect people from Rochdale train station.
It is possible for us to teach at a venue of your choice if that is preferable but we would have to add on the cost of transporting all the drums (and they take up a lot of room!).
It’s not necessary to have any previous drumming experience for the workshop, and we will teach a simple song that everyone will be able to take away and practice at home. We can video the song routine and forward on CD copies to any of the workshop attendees who wish to have a copy.
If you need to know any more details please do ask!
Kind regards

John Bolwell is the founder of Tantara Taiko drummers and he has gathered a wealth of experience in movement and music.
He has over 35 years experience in the practice of Oriental martial arts and has studied and taught these throughout the UK, Europe and the Far East. An interest in combining elements of music, martial and performing arts led him to travel to China to train in Peking Opera ‘Warrior Role’.
His percussive explorations began in 1989 and have included studying African drumming in the Gambia and Chenda drumming in South India.
In 2002 he travelled to Japan to train in Taiko drumming with Masaaki Kurumaya in Fukui. Since then he has continued this practice with Mugenkyo, Liz Walters of Tamashii, and Hiroshi Motofuji.
He set up Tantara Taiko in his home town of Rochdale in 2003 and the band currently has 16 players.
